AMESA 2014 was by far the coldest and biggest conference that Seartec,
proud distributor of SHARP, has attended so far. The 2014 national AMESA was held in the beautiful town of Kimberley at Hoerskool Diamantveld. Over 1 100 maths teachers from around the country attended this years AMESA and there was a buzz of excitement in the air as teachers registered for the conference.
Seartec exhibited at the conference and showed off the wonderful range of SHARP calculators, including the latest SHARP EL-W535HTB scientific calculator. This calculator has a unique mode called Drill Mode. This mode allows students to practice their basic arithmetic on the calculator. Instead of you asking the calculator what the answer is, in this mode the calculator asks you what the answer is. You type it in, press equals and the calculator will mark the question right or wrong. At the end of 25, 50 or 100 questions you are given your mark and percentage. Teachers had lots of fun trying to beat their scores as well as the scores of their fellow teachers.
Also at the stand were free resources
for teachers to check out from two websites sponsored by Seartec – this website and www.e-classroom.co.za (sponsored in part – which does grade R to grade 7 worksheets), both have free worksheets for teachers to download that are all according to the CAPS curriculum.
Seartec also had 4 maths market sessions that teachers could attend.
Teachers were lining up outside the door at lunch time in order to get into the workshops where 40 teachers each day received their very own SHARP EL535 scientific calculator.
On Monday Nicole presented data handling to GET teachers.
On Tuesday Tal presented algebra skills using the SHARP EL535 also to GET teachers. this workshop was also attended by teachers in the intersen phase. To get this presentation click here.
On Wednesday, Tal presented Financial Maths skills to the Math Lit teachers. The techniques used in this workshop can also be used by teachers in grade 8 and 9. To get this presentation click here.

On Friday the closing ceremony said a sad good bye to the current AMESA president, Alwyn Olivier, and welcomed in the new president Nico Govender. Seartec wishes to congratulate Nico on this prestigious title. We wish him all the best for his new term ahead.
Seartec also wishes to congratulate these 5 lucky winners: Thuso Motlele, Elizabeth Vilakazi, Kandy Pillay, Kgololo Riet, Joseph Makama. Each of these prize winners received a SHARP gift bag including a 4gb USB stick at the closing ceremnony.
The closing ceremony also gave those who attended a taste of whats in store for AMESA 2015 which is happening in Limpopo from the 6th to the 10th of July. It takes place at the University of Limpopo. We will keep you updated on this exciting event.
