Dear Fellow Teachers,
Wow! Its nearly the beginning of March. I can’t believe how fast the year is going. Soon it will be the festive season again and people will be wondering how Santa makes it across the skies in time to fill every child’s sock with presents. For an interesting maths take on Santa’s travelling time click here.
Are you struggling to come up with some exciting lessons for the classroom?
These teachers from the UK used dance routines to teach transformations, rotations and reflections, or using a paper plane to teach speed and gravity. Click here to see how they also used spaghetti to teach trigonometry.
Soon to arrive on the mathsatsharp website will be revision sheets for term 1 for grade 10, 11 and 12. These will test all the skills that should have been learnt over the course of the first term. They will of course have fully worked memorandums and will follow the CAPS curriculum.
From the 10th of March to the 14th of March, SHARP will be participating in the Sci-Bono Maths week.
Students from grade 4 to 12 can participate in different maths related workshops and is a lot of fun for all involved. Plus the teachers are invited to attend teacher centered workshops while students are participating in activities. The cost per student is R10 (for public schools) or R15 (for private schools). Email bookings@sci-bono.co.za or contact Siphokazi Ndzamela or Cynthia Sithole on 011 639 8400/91/5 to make enquiries or bookings.
Another exciting thing coming up on the calendar is the Limpopo local conference happening on the 21st to the 22nd of March at Tom Naude High school from 8.00. If you are a mathematics teacher in Limpopo and would like to attend the local conference please contact Mr Mabotja on 072 189 9298.
Finally the inspired teachers conference is taking place on the 27th of March at Victory Theatre from 8.00 a.m. Meet and share with Graeme Bloch, Professor Khalil Osiris, John Luis,Tim Allen, Carol Fields, Kate Liquorish, lan Committie, Mmipe George Mokgehle, Gillian Godsell, and chair Janet Baylis to find new and inspiring ways to teach your classes. The cost per teacher is R715 and includes lunch and two teas. To make a booking please call Lizzy Mafalo on (011) 880-9749 or 072 123 457. We look forward to seeing you there.
And of course, the first term is nearly over for the public schools – just 4 weeks to go. We hope that this first term has been wonderfully productive and fun and that you have lots of exciting things planned for your break.
Have a wonderful Monday
Tal, Nicole and the SHARP Team.
