July’s Newsletter Riddle – Answer

The Riddle:

The police rounded up Jim, Bud and Sam yesterday, because one of them was suspected of having robbed the local bank. The three suspects made the following statements under intensive questioning:

  • Jim: I’m innocent.
  • Bud: I’m innocent.
  • Sam: Bud is guilty.

If only one of these statements turns out to be true, who robbed the bank?

This was an exercise in logic:

If Jim’s statement is true it means that both Bud ans Sam are lying, which if you look at the statements is a contradiction.

But if Bud’s statement is true it means Jim is guilty and bud is innocent.

It means that Jim robbed the bank.

Make sense?
