In July of last year Pareto (the company that owns the Pavillion, West gate and many other shopping malls) came up with a novel concept to help with the low mathematics achievement levels in the country. The concept – called NuMiracle Maths Labs – was to give disadvantaged students the chance to excel at maths, by giving them the extra help and support they need.
There are currently two maths labs
– one in the Pavillion and one in Westgate – with a new centre opening in Southgate in the coming months. The maths labs take on 36 students from schools in the area. Each student attends the maths lab for 4 hours a week. The students follow the Master Maths program and will stay with the centre until they complete their matric. This program is sponsored by Pareto. The state of the art maths centres are based in the shopping malls for easy access to the students and the space is sponsored by Pareto.
When Seartec learned of this incredible project,
they immediately jumped at the opportunity to be involved. Each student and tutor at the centre was given the latest Sharp scientific calculator – the EL535. These calculators will help the students to achive their best without being hindered by a lack of the right equipment for mathematics.
We were invited to hang out with the fantastic students from Princess High at the Westgate NuMiracle Maths Lab last week. The students were happy to be at the centre and enjoyed a little photo shoot with their new calculators (their photos are below). It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and when it came time to work these awesome teens quickly settled in and put their pens to paper.
We are really excited about this novel concept and look forward to seeing where these very special students will be in the future.
Good luck and all the best NuMiracle Math Lab students! We are rooting for you guys!
